Richard O’Kelly: A good start – where we can improve

Richard O’Kelly has pinpointed care in possession and physicality as the two key areas for improvement ahead of our first home game of the season against Bournemouth this weekend.

We led for 76 minutes at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday following John McGinn‘s early opener, but Spurs’ pressure eventually told as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Having now dissected the performance in full, O’Kelly knows where we can step up against The Cherries at Villa Park.

He said: “Tottenham eventually showed their quality and why they were the second best team in Europe last season.

“From our point of view, what do we take from it? I thought our organisation throughout the game was very good.

“What we probably didn’t do as well as we have done in the past is show our qualities on the ball – and press as unit.

“We sat in a bit at times and that’s not quite us.

“The improvement must come in the belief on the ball and the little things, which later lead to bigger things.

“We need to compete with the physicality. A couple of times we were beaten to easily for possession of the ball.

“The Premier League isn’t all about technique. There’s lots of endeavour and strength involved as well.”
