Dean’s debrief: Late loss, Bjorn bouncing back, Pepe saves and missing Mings

Dean Smith spoke to the media at Villa Park after seeing his side lose to Tottenham in the final seconds of a hard-fought clash.

The Aston Villa manager spoke on a number of topics as he picked through the 3-2 defeat to Spurs.

Here’s what he had to say…

On result…

It was a sore one because of the time they scored, but the last two games at Villa Park we’ve been the victors with two last-minute goals. It’s a tough one to take, perhaps more because of the performance as I thought we were really good.

There was lots of personality in our performance today. We had a VAR decision go against us again, which is disappointing, but if our performance levels continue to be like that, we won’t go too far wrong.

We came up against a quality front four today and they can cause problems for any team.

On Bjorn Engels…

He’s very disappointed because of the mistake.

He’s tried to bring the ball rather than put it straight back.If he puts it straight back it finishes 2-2.

It was a big error but they happen in games. He’ll get over it for sure.

On Pepe Reina…

He’s made some really good saves today. On top of that, his distribution is what he gives us as well.

They’ve had some chances, but at 1-0 we had chances where we could have put the game to bed and couldn’t quite take them.In the second half, we knew they were strong on the counter-attack and that we had to try and stop them.

Most of their chances came from the counters.

On Tyrone Mings…

He came in yesterday morning and wasn’t feeling well.

I thought he’d be ok to play so I didn’t name the team until I found out how he was today.

We think he’s got tonsillitis, so we’ll get him rested and back ready for next weekend.
